[edit] Overview

Playing VGAP4 since mid 2006, started with the Borg, switched to UEA end 08 and currently doing my first game as CoM.

[edit] Game Selection Criteria

Nowadays I tend to go for relatively fast paced games on smallish maps with low to poor starting conditions. Optimally these games end around turn 60-70 at the latest. Everything else becomes a major management nightmare and time-sink.

Specifically:

  • 10-15 planets per player or less. I started out with 20 (after a first experience with the Echo Cluster), but few people play as aggressive as I do,

so I usually end up with a bigger share which has to be managed.

  • Diameter of 600ly or less. If you can't make it across in a few turns, things get draaaaawn ooooouuuuut.
  • Number of players 10 or less, 6 might be best. The fewer people, the lesser the chance of an immediate drop.
  • Starting money 10K or less, population 1M or less, few HW resources, few Natives, few surface items.

Most of this can be relaxed, if the people playing are of comparable skill (thank god for the league).

[edit] My ship comparison tables

Whenever I try to compare different ships, I always find something missing in the current ship-comparison tables. Either I want to take some unit into combat that the table's creator didn't think of as a fighting ship (and hence didn't include in the combat-table), or I want to know some trait that's not included in the table I'm looking at, etc.. In any case, I usually end up hunting around through multiple pages _and_ often overlook things. So these tables are my attempt at doing comparisons better, by simply including _all_ the data. I'll leave them here for now, and hopefully later (once the layout stabilizes) migrate them to a more central place.

Ships are ordered like in raceview (Hull Id?), values taken from raceview. The different values are roughly sorted into groups:

  • Offensive: SuW (Super Weapon), LW (Large Weapons) [number x size], FBay (Fighter Bays) [number x wing-size], SW (Small Weapons), Atk (Attack modifier), Eng (Engines), Gen (Generators), PwB (Power Bank), Ord (Ordnance).
  • Defensive: Armor, Shield, PD (Point Defense), Evade (Evasive Modifier), Mass (Hull Mass), Crew.
  • Cost: Money [Mc], Dur (Duranium), Trit (Tritanium), Moly (Molybdanium).
  • Mobility: Speed, Hyp (Hyper Jump) [distance/class], Fuel, Drag (Warp Drag Factor), Scan (Scan Range), Sig (Warp Signature), Dock (Dry Dock) [size], Msw/dr (Mine-sweeper/dropper) [/type], Cloak [fuelcost], Tract (Tractor Beam).
  • Transport: Repair, Cargo, Pods, Guest

See here for a full set of tables.

Missing traits:

  • Damage Modifiers: Mostly irrelevant imo. Possible exceptions are hull/system modifiers. Most ships are dead pretty much immediately after the Armor is gone, with the Anni being a notable exception.
  • Devices: JPG, Hisser, Incareration Beam, Contr Lockdown, Light Speed, UniComm, ... . They are important, but space is limited.

[edit] Template

The tables are based on these templates (copied/adjusted from the LW-table):

[edit] Auto-generated ship tables

These tables are based on an excel file, kindly provided by shard. I've edited it slightly and use a couple of scripts to generate the following tables. Please do not edit directly, let me know wrong entries in the Bugs section, and I'll update the underlying table/scripts.
