[edit] Figuring Out The Formula
Alright, this is the test data I've collected so far...
Samples (Bases) Colonists Ports Max New Colonists ======================================================== 200 (less tests!) 5,000,000 1 6,577 650 5,000,000 5 33,226 650 5,000,000 10 66,418 650 5,000,000 11 87,324 650 5,000,000 12 87,387 650 5,000,000 15 94.518 650 5,000,000 20 93,556 650 5,000,000 25 100,903 650 5,000,000 30 101,164 650 5,000,000 35 108,075 200 (less tests!) 5,000,000 100 130,558
- Samples = The number of bases that were tested
- Colonists = The number of colonists per base
- Ports = The number of public space ports
- Max New Colonists = The max number of new colonists (looking at all bases), excluding normal breeding
The maximum number of new colonists produced seems to increase linearly up until 10 public space ports. For 11 and higher, though, the formula appears to change completely. Eleven ports is actually much more efficient than 10, but the efficiency drops like a rock after that:
Ports Efficiency ================== 1 1.315 5 1.329 10 1.328 11 1.587 !!! 12 1.456 15 1.260 20 0.936 25 0.807 30 0.674 35 0.618 100 0.261
- Efficiency = Max New Colonists / ( Public Space Ports * (Colonists/1000) )
The formula on the main page was estimated using Excel's built-in Solver tool.
Yet another thing to consider. This turn, in one of my real games, I received the following message in my base log: "We have had an arrivel from race number 1". What does this mean? Is it related to public space ports?
(Race 1 is my own race, BTW)
I'd suggest that the formula for the maximum colonists showing up is closer to:
Colonists/1000*PSP*1.33 for up to 10 PSPs (no change).
Colonists/1000*SQRT(2*PSP)+66,500 for more than 10 PSPs.
This isn't quite right, as the maximum with this formula falls below the maximum reached in on of the tests, but all other points are close. I chose 66,500 as it is the maximum reached by 10 PSPs, but if this number was any higher at all (67,500 even, but more likely to be 70,000), then all data points would fall under its curve.
The Public Space Port will slowly gather all natives in 200ly that are planets surfaces, you don't need to have any natives inside the base for this to work.
Are you sure about that? I always thought you need a seeding native pop of a type to gather natives from the surfaces of other planets.
The base with the PSP will not gather the natives on the surface of the same planet your PSP are.
I assume you mean the gathering mentioned above, but not the general joining of natives, as this should be untouched by a psp? Jochen 15:26, 29 March 2006 (CEST)
I have done this many times with at least 2 races the EE and the UEA, I had a PSP in range of many natives planets with the 300ly range, they were all coming in, and I got base log messages to confirm from where they come, I bring ghipsoldal in that way with no contraband, and 0 natives in my PSP, will bring all types but chupanoids and no insectoid for the UEA. I Also got Amorphous in for the EE that way.
I have put PSP on planet where I had natives on the surfacem They never joined, but joined my other PSP in the 300 ly.
This have been done in real games. It seem like I have done a discovery.

With the Borg I have attracted Siliconoid with mode 1, with a single psp gathered from 2 planet surface in range.
A group of 4329 Siliconoid natives from the planet Pythas Nu has joined this base. A group of 691 Siliconoid natives from the planet Caladan Nu has joined this base.

Lord Lancelot, your recent change is not correct. That type of gathering is the type 3 gathering. --Magik 06:38, 8 February 2007 (CET)
I will make a new surface gathering section, you can attack natives from planet surfaces in 300ly, without having natives in your base, thise is not native generation. Lord Lancelot 18:40, 8 February 2007 (CET)
I think that you may be confusing what you see. You must have natives of a given type to be able to attract natives of that same type from within 300 ly. And their happiness in your base must exceed 70. That is gain method 1. For gain method 3, there is a small chance to gain new natives from nowhere, which will then immediately (same turn) attract natives from with 300 ly if the happiness is high enough. The message that you get for new natives from nowhere is "New <type> have arrived...". The message that you get from attraction withing 300 ly specifies how many. There is also a chance that your happy natives in your base will increase in population by 10%, which gives a message that is the same "New <type> have arrived...", which is there for confusion I believe. The way that the article was written was correct, but probably confusing. --Magik 18:47, 8 February 2007 (CET)
Ok I get it now, new natives have been generated than my psp gathered the same type from a planet surface in the same turn, this happenend a few times in different game, I did not remember what the base logs said, but is must have been that.
Maybe mode 3, should be renamed mode 1...
Feel free to rewrite if needed.
