If any game ever needed a Wiki, Planets4 is at the top of the list! Great idea. Let's fill it up!

How about posting some general guidelines for where to create new sections? Some obvious missing elements that new players are going to want:

  • VGAP4 Hosting sites
  • Client/Host Tools, 3rd party programs
  • Where to get game files

- Roger

Sounds good to me. What do you think, perhaps a "links"-section?

Yes, I guess a "links" section is basically what I'm describing. However, I know that from my own browsing habits, I'm very unlikely to find anything if it's hidden in a page called "Links". It ought to have a more descriptive title. Perhaps "Resources" (hopefully not to be confused with minerals and supplies!)?

- Roger

That's what I thought when I created the "bugs" section ;) Other names:

  • "Usefull Stuff"
  • "New Players start here"

[edit] Standard Ships

How about adding a section for descriptions of standard ships (like the Merlin)? It would certainly reduce work and keep things tidy...

Added a Standard ships section...

[edit] Race Guides

I tried to "sort" the Race Guide part a bit. I put all the race guides into a category. This way raceguides get automatically added to the category page and you have a link at the bottom of the page to all categories this page is in. The old "Race-Guide" Page should not be used anymore. Only use the new one that is linked from the Main Page.

[edit] table of contents

The standard table can be quite lenghty (whole first page on minefields or some race guides). Do we have another option (beside "hiding it", which is not a real option.)? Can wiki put that one to the left side of the page ? Do we really need the link set (linked pages, upload etc) on each page ? (sun)

I actually don't have a problem with the toc showing up, instead I dislike it when it is not shown as I have to scroll the whole page on my own to filter information. Does anybody have a problem with me forcing the toc to show up on the race guide pages? Morg 13:22, 11 July 2008 (CEST)

No objections, but you know that there is an option "Show table of contents (for pages with more than 3 headings)" on the preferences page when you are logged in? Maybe using this will also do the job...? Jochen 14:52, 11 July 2008 (CEST)

[edit] Racial Categories

How about a Category for each race? Then we could tie Fighters, Ships and other sub-pages back to their race without also tying them to the Race Guide Category.

Good idea, I already had something in mind like Category:Robot Fighter, Category:Robot:Assault Craft etc., but your approach is far better. We could assign the raceguides to these categories, too. Very simple, very elegant. Let's do it. (Jochen)

[edit] Where's the content?

You know, somebody visting for the first time is probably most likely to click on Documentation or Tips & Tricks. And yet those are arguably the two least useful pages at the moment, given their lack of content! We should either fill those sections up or make it more obvious where to find the good content.

A few user have reported not been able to reach Jochen via the e-mail on the main page, maybe you could also put a note that you can be reached via as BlackNo1

Done ;)

I'm going to update the Mediawiki-Engine the PlanetsWiki is running under, so it may be possible that you temporarily encounter problems when trying to reach the site.
Jochen 18:31, 11 April 2006 (CEST)

Yes! It really seems to work ;)

One of the changes in the new mediawiki engine I updated to is a new tag 'nocinlude':

<noinclude>some text</noinclude>

That way you can exlude parts of a page from being displayed when the page is included in another page as template. This can be very handy when including categories as the page including a page belonging to a category would otherwise be in that category, too (as it would have included the category-tag). Now with the noinclude-tag you can prevent the category-tags from being included. This can be very handy in reducing redundant information in the wiki (have a look at Category:The_Aczanny_Pyramids_-_Assault_Craft and Category:The_Aczanny_Pyramids for an example).

Just wanted to tell you:
If you are logged in, you can choose a skin (the way the wiki should be displayed like for you) via preferences -> Skin.
There is an alternative skin available called 'Planets', that has a black background with white text (this makes the pictures muuuch nicer ;).
What I want to know of you is: Do you like that skin? Should we make this skin the default skin?

Jochen 11:03, 26 May 2006 (CEST)

I just tried the planet skin, It hard to read link and the short list of title at the beginning of most page (content). So please leave the default skin, and maybe try to change a few text color in planet skin.
Lord Lancelot 18:09, 26 May 2006 (CEST)

Changed it to a black background.
I can understand you, at the beginning I was used to the "old" style, but well I'm using the new style now for more than a month and don't want to miss it ;)

[edit] Anomymous

Is it wise and safe to have the password on the main site ?
I think posting the password on drewhead, Rc world is fine, but on the main page here ? could this bring back spammer and vandalisim ?

Lord Lancelot 17:14, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

The spam we had was obviuosly done by spambots automatically creating accounts. If someone would like to spam / vandalize now, he/she would it intentionally, so I don't think there's great danger. If the anonymous account won't work. I'll remove it asap.
