[edit] Overview

Ships are made from metals and not just any metal; refined metal from raw ore. You may find ore on the surface of planets and dig some up using mineral mines, but there are not many ways to refine the ore. One way is the use of this building: the smelter. The problem with smelters is that they require a lot of heat to do their job, which consumes combustibles, which puts pollution into the air and your colonists may not like that very much.

Each smelter has 4 refining chambers that can handle up to 10kt of raw ore per turn. Each refining chamber is designed to handle one of the four common ores. Ore can be transported from planet to planet inside of an ore pod. Ore pods can be placed inside of a ship's cargo bay or launched from a planet by a pod launch pad and travel without the aid of a ship. Ore is extracted from the ground by mineral mines. For example, if there is a supply of all 4 different types of ore then one smelter will produce 15kt of metal and 5kt fuel.

  • Each smelter produces 5kt of a metal (or neutronium fuel) for each 10kt of the corresponding ore at a base.
  • Handles all 4 metal/ore/mineral types at he same time and each has 10kt capacity.
  • Having more than 5 smelters and 400k colonists at a ground base will cause a happiness drop equal to the number of smelters divided by 5.
  • To stop happiness drop, you have to destroy them with command codes (see below).
  • Smelters can be destroyed by a "Sabotage Base" spy attack.
  • They add 50 "hit points" each to a ground base, which will help keep it from being destroyed.

  • The Solorian Unity cannot build Smelters, but if they come into possession of some then they will function normally with the exception that they will not smelt neutronium ore. Each Smelter will process 10kt of each type of ore, producing 5kt of each type of metal.

[edit] How to Remove Them

  • You can use the base command code EPA to command all mines and smelters on your base will be destroyed, which is useful if you build too much of them or capture some excess from the enemy.

  • New: Smelter: Will no longer smelt odd amounts of ore. Double penalty for excessive smelters removed. The only penalty now is when there are over 5 smelters while there are over 400k colonists present in a base.
