- Ship crews have ratings of happiness, skill and experience.
- A ships skill level and experience improves over time.
- A ship will start with 10 skill unless the base that it is launched from has Training Centers and High Guard Rangers.
- You gain skill from ship combat. Firing and hitting with small and large weapons gives 1 point of skill.
[edit] Benefits of High Skill
- High skill helps with ramming. (Increases odds of doing so.) If an enemy ship has high skill it is harder to ram.
- The highest skilled ships get to use their transporters before lower skilled ships during attempted boarding actions. During the boarding combat, high skilled colonists, crew, and troops get to attack and kill off the enemy first.
- Higher skilled ships get to use their ship devices before lower skilled ships.
- Ship devices, like mine sweeper array at a time that advantage you (minesweep after the enemy as layed their mine, instead of before).
- Higher skilled crew are less likely to run from ship combat.
- Higher skilled crew can maneuver their ship better in combat.
- Skilled crew have an advantage when an assault pod docks with their ship in combat.

- Fed Loki Class Destroyers with high skill can make better use of their tachyon emitter ship device.
