[edit] The Borg Menace

A rumble in the sky stirs up the people living in a small Solar Federation mining base at the outer fringe of the empire. Five probes of Cyborg design land and release their cargo. A small invasion force of 500 droids immediately begins its dreadful task of assimilation. The Federation's base council debates how to respond.

Their base has only a tiny amount of money, no defensive ground structures, no assault craft nor fighters stationed. Help from the motherland is far away, and won't arrive within the next 5 turns. Evacuation of the base is impossible because central command was too thrifty to let them build a pod launcher.

This is the situation at the beginning of the turn. This is what the two players see when opening their new rst-file. Be aware: Before ground combat actually starts the Cyborg will convert 20% of their colonists to troops. That means they will then have 200 troops that you don't see yet.

[edit] Cyborg

  • Capture!

[edit] Pairing the strategies

As a convention the Solar Federation will be listed as the first player, the Cyborg as the second player. This does not necessarily indicate the attacker/defender status of the two players.

  • Peaceful vs peaceful

No ground combat occurs. Outlook is bleak. Within 12 turns all Federation colonists are assimilated. The number of Borg troops grows by 20 percent per turn.

[edit] Extremely asymmetric warfare

[edit] Aggressive Fed vs peaceful Borg

  • Roaming defense vs peaceful

The Solar Federation sends out a quarter of their troops (75) to patrol outside their base. The Borg hasn't sent out any troops. The ground combat routine will pick up the aggressive behavior of the Federation and run through the calculations, but there will be no casualties on either side. !!!LOG BUG!!! The ground combat log message is wrong! It tells you that the Solar Federation is attacking with 6000 colonists and 75 Troops and that the Borg is defending with 800 colonists and ZERO troops!

In the next turn's rst-file the Solar Federation player should see the number of Federation colonists reduced by another 500 assimilations, the Borg should see 1300 Cyborg colonists and 200 troops. At the start of the next ground combat, the Borg will number 1040 colonists and 460 troops.

  • Deep Ground Patrol vs peaceful

The Solar Federation sends out half their troops (150) to patrol outside their base. The Borg hasn't sent out any troops to the battle field. The ground combat routine runs through the calculations, again no casualties on either side. !!!LOG BUG!!! Log message wrong: It tells you that the Solar Federation is attacking with 6000 colonists and 150 Troops and that the Borg is defending with 800 colonists and ZERO troops!

  • Attack and run vs peaceful

The Federation council decides to do a hit&run attack at the Borg base. 90 percent (270) Federation troops will leave their base, attack the Borg base and then withdraw back home.

!!!LOG BUG!!! Log message wrong: says Solar Federation attacking with 6000 colonists and 270 Troops, Borg defending with 800 colonists and ZERO troops!

The attack on the Borg base has some effects. Using Ground Assault Simulator 1.03 there will be on average (numbers may slightly vary due to random factors) a total of 261 Federation troops remaining vs 175 Borg troops. The Federation's battle losses are higher than the Borg's losses. And the Borg will quickly replace the dead troops ...

  • Crush Kill Destroy! vs peaceful

The Federation council is panicked and orders all-out war against the Borg. 95% of the crew (190) and troops (285) and 1 High Guard (80%) march out. !!!LOG BUG!!! Log message wrong: says Solar Federation attacking with 6000 colonists, 190 crew, 285 Troops (High Guard is not listed), Borg defending with 800 colonists and ZERO troops!

This time the Federation almost succeeds. Both sides suffer heavy casualties. Ground Assault Simulator numbers tell you that the Fed's field army has been completely annihilated, including the High Guard. Surviving are only the small garrison of 10 crew and 15 troops and the colonists in the base. The Borg is decimated down to a about a quarter of the troops and colonists each. The log also says that about one to two dozens (varies due to random factors) captured Cyborg implants are removed. Thus the Feds have more than 6000 colonists at the end of the turn. There is not yet a 'capture' or 'surrender'-phrase in the log.

Combat strength after the battle: Federation: 15x5+10*20+6020*10/10000=206,8 Borg: 50*40+200*40/10000=2000,8

Without reinforcements the Federation is fighting a lost cause. If it repeats the attack the Fed base will surrender to the Borg due to a higher than 3:1 combat strength ratio.

  • Capture! vs peaceful

Ground Assault Simulator doesn't offer that option. Results for the Federation will be worse than with Crush Kill Destroy!

[edit] Peaceful Fed vs aggressive Borg

Let's say the Borg player is fearful of Federation reinforcements arriving soon and wants to speed up the conquest.

  • Peaceful vs Roaming Defense

No casualties on either side. Unhindered Borg assimilation and troop conversion.

  • Peaceful vs Deep Ground Patrol

No casualties on either side. Unhindered Borg assimilation and troop conversion.

  • Peaceful vs Attack and Run

On average Borg loses 35 troops. Fed losses amount to about 25 troops, 30 crew and 25 colonists. Unhindered Borg assimilation and troop conversion.

  • Peaceful vs Crush Kill Destroy!

Federation Base is captured. However, unless the Borg didn't view the Fed personnel as bounty this will amount to a Pyhrric victory. Very often the complete Federation population is killed during the battle. On average the surviving Federation population consists of about 100 colonists and less than 10 crew and troops each. They will be taken prisoners. The Borg losses amount to about 70 percent of their troops. Summing it up, the Borg + prisoners together number about the same as before the ground combat.

  • Peaceful vs Capture!

Ground Assault Simulator doesn't offer that option. Results for the Borg will be better than with Crush Kill Destroy!

[edit] Skirmish warfare

  • Roaming Defense vs Roaming Defense
  • Roaming Defense vs Deep Ground Patrol
  • Deep Ground Patrol vs Roaming Defense

If an enemy base is set to Roaming Defense and your base is set to Deep Ground Patrol, your patrol in the field will be attacked by the roaming defense force first - according to the order of events for a Roaming Defense attack (see above).

Your surviving patrol force will then launch its own attack - according to the order of events for a Deep Ground Ground Patrol - on the surviving Roaming Defense force. This skirmish takes place outside the two bases. The forces remaining in the two bases will not get involved. Survivors will return to their respective base. Both bases survive unscathed to the next turn.

  • Deep Ground Patrol vs Deep Ground Patrol

The two patrols fight it out in the field through the two consecutive Deep Ground Patrol attacks. The right of mounting the first attack is decided by lot. Then the roles are reversed for the second attack. Both bases survive unscathed to the next turn.

[edit] Ambush warfare

Your Deep Ground Patrol is given the privilege of the first attack against the enemy army that is avancing on to your base. Often a Deep Ground Patrol force will not survive against the numerically superior enemy, but it will decimate the enemy's army to some extent ahead of the following main battle between the invasion force and your base defenders.
