[edit] Overview
If you want to eat, build a farm. Your colonists are hungry. When they occupy cities then they get even more hungry. Food is probably the most precious commodity in the game. One of the easiest ways to get it is by having many farming planets. Planets that are favorable to your race's preferred climate and have a good horticulture rating are good targets. There are only so many places to build a farm, so the horticulture rating limits the number of farms that can be built for all bases on the planet.
Most planets can support anywhere from 0 to 200 farms. If two or more races are living on the same planet they must share the available farm land. The first race to build a farm gets the land. It is possible for one race to use all the farm land while other races use none. Food is used by colonists, cities, resorts, med labs, and much more. Med Labs use food to produce medical packs. Food can be carried from planet to planet in a ship's cargo hold or by using a resupply cargo pod.
- Each Farm produces 1mc and 1 Food Unit per turn.
- The planet climate must be within a race's farming climate range for a farm to work.
- Need 1000 Colonist per Farm (default), or zero if the HConfig switch Farms require 1000 colonists each to run them is turned off.
- Farms can be destroyed by a "Sabotage Base" spy attack.
- They add 50 "hit points" each to a ground base, which will help keep it from being destroyed.
- They can be destroyed by the Solar Gamma Ray ship device.
[edit] Special
- The HConfig setting New Farms Per Turn limits the max. number of farms that can be built each turn in a base.
- If the HConfig setting Farms require 1000 colonists each to run them is turned on, the New Farms Per Turn value is ignored, but you need 1,000 Colonists for each farm to be built and to be active. This setting also splits up the number of farms that are built before movement and after movement during the base production phase of the host run.
- Each planet can support only a number of farms up to his soil (horticulture rating).
- Planetary farm land (soil) is shared between all bases on a planet.
- Any farms that exceed the planet's soil rating are destroyed/removed.
- The Soil Reformer ship device can increase the soil rating of a planet.
- The Soil Sterilizer ship device can lower the soil rating of a planet.
- The Protomatter Cannon can change an Asteroid Field into a planet with a soil rating of 600+.
[edit] Race Specific
- The RCS building Arerran Capital will double the food output from active working farms. It will also produce medical units equal to the number of active working farms.
- The RCS building Nawole Garden will cut the food output from active working farms by 87.5% (one-eighth production).
- The Robot do not need food.
- The IMT and Crystals cannot build farms.
