[edit] Overview

A fighter bay or more aptly named, "Wing Bay" is the area on a ship where a wing can be docked and protected from minefields, enemy ship weapons, etc. Having a wing docked to a ship also allows the wing to travel as the ship does, without having to rely on the travel mechanism of the wing itself.

A ship will have a number of bays for wings and a size that applies to all bays. A bay can hold a wing of any size that is equal to or less than the size restriction of the ship. When referring to size, it is the sum of all fighter types in a single wing. If a wing's size is larger than the ship's limitation then it will either take up one or more additional wing bay or not be able to dock with the ship. A ship cannot have more separate wings docked with it than it has wing bays.

[edit] Docking

For example, if you have a ship with 10 size 100 wing bays, you can either dock one size 1000 wing to it or 10 size 100 wings. You can mix this up by having one size 200 wing and one size 800 wing if you so desired.

If you attempt to dock a wing to a ship that is too large or the ship doesn't have the remaining capacity, then you may receive a message as shown below in the wing's log.

This wing can not dock with the dock target
This wing has 2000 fighters.
The ship has room for only 150 fighters.

[edit] Merging docked Wings

You can increase the size of wings by docking them to other wings (merging them). If you want to keep a wing docked to a ship but still increase it then you need to set the wing that is docked already as the hammer and another wing that you want to add to the docked wing as the anvil. This is only possible if the resulting wing wouldn't overload the carrier.

[edit] Replenish Fighters

Each ship with a fighter bay has a switch "Replenish Fighters". When a Ship with this switch turned on ends movement over a Base with fighters, Fighters reinforce existing Wings, and form new Wings to fill empty Bays.

Type 3 are all loaded first, then Type 2, and then Type 1.

[edit] Partially filled Bay

  • Existing Wings gain enough additional fighters to fill a single Bay.

[edit] Wing occupies more than 1 Bay

  • Wings of a size larger than can be accommodated in a single Bay do not gain additional Fighters.

[edit] Empty Bay

  • Each empty Bay is filled with a single Wing.
  • Existing Wings are reinforced before new Wings are formed.

[edit] When

  • After Movement

[edit] Forming Wings with custom composition

Using the replenish fighters switch it is possible to create wings with with custom composition without the need of a Air Attack Base (it is even possible to create wings with only 1 fighter).

  • You may only form a single such Wing every turn per base.
  • You need a Fighter Plant in the base and a ship with empty Fighter Bays in orbit.
  • Build only enough of each fighter type for your 'custom blend' (Must be smaller than a single Bay in size).
  • The ship in orbit need to turn Replenish Fighters On.
  • Ship will combine all Fighters into a single Wing.
  • If the ship already has a fighter wing docked that is smaller than the bay size, the new fighters will be added to the existing wing, so you need to undock newly created wing every turn.
